Anchorage to Kenai Peninsula - Alaska

Why is the Ice Blue? Glacier Ice forms after countless snowfalls. The increasing weight causes the air to be squeezed out leaving dense, compact ice. The various colours that make up sunlight have different wavelengths and energy associated with them, so are absorbed and reflected differently. In regular ice, the air bubbles scatter all the light, creating the white appearance. Crystals of glacial ice are so dense that few cracks or air bubbles exist to reflect the light. With glacier ice it is only the blue high energy, high intensity light that you see reflected back to your eye.
