South Island New Zealand

The Rakaia River is one of the largest braided rivers in New Zealand, it rises in the Southern Alps, travelling 150 kilometres before entering the Pacific Ocean 50 kilometres south of Christchurch. The 10.4km walk along the top of the Rakaia Gorge takes around 3-4 hours return so we chose to do the first half of it before continuing south on the Inland Scenic Route (highway 72). Select the photo to see the view from the lookout partway along the walk.
