Hawkes Bay to Rotorua, New Zealand

We continued driving 15 minutes south of Rotorua to Tikitapu, known as the Blue Lake, because of its clear clean crystal blue water. The colour is said to be caused by the rhyolite and pumice on the lake bed. It lies within a volcanic caldera formed within the last 300,000 years and has no visible outlet. It is very pretty and lots of water sports were underway as we continued onto Rotokakahi, the Green Lake. This lake (seen here) gets its emerald green colour from the air due to its shallow, sandy bottom. Select the photo below to see the blue lake.
