Out the other side of the railway tunnel which went through the mountain, was another steel truss Western Portal Bridge which took us across another river to the foundations of a Battery. Three large batteries were built at Karangahake in the 1890s - the Crown, Talisman and Woodstock - for the treatment of ore taken from extensive mine networks inside Karangahake Mountain.
