Dunedin to Catlins to Bluff

It rained overnight and was quite windy but it cleared by morning as we drove south along the Otago coast of New Zealand. We stopped at a beach on the coast south of Oamaru, to see the Moeraki Boulders. They are unusually large spherical boulders lying along a stretch of Koekohe Beach. Local Māori legends say the boulders are the remains of eel baskets washed ashore from the wreck of a large sailing canoe. The larger boulders, 2m across, have taken over 4 million years to grow while up to 50 metres of marine mud settled on the seafloor above them. They are now exposed as the sand erodes away.
