Dunedin to Catlins to Bluff

This fossil forest at Curio Bay dates back 180 million years ago, to the Jurassic period. when New Zealand would have been part of the Gondwanaland super continent. We were told to look out for yellow-eyed penguins (the bay area is a protected nesting ground) and for Hector dolphins playing in the surf. On this wild, windy day it was exciting to stand up close and watch the ocean waves crashing onto the rocky platform, but it was unlikely that we would spot any dolphins today! We felt sorry for any penguins that might try to enter and leave the surf in these conditions but I guess they still do. Select the photo below to see more of this amazing area.
