Farewell Spit to Foxton Beach, New Zealand

From Picton to Wellington is a 92km voyage and takes 3 hours. It is probably one of the most beautiful ferry rides in the world with the trip through the Marlborough Sounds and then Wellington Harbour. BUT the bit in the middle, Cook Strait, can also be one of the world’s roughest stretches of water. This is because the westerly wind belt known as the Roaring Forties blows through this gap between the main islands and acts like a huge wind tunnel. Lucky for us it was a lovely day!
