UK and Europe Roadtrip - EsztergomEsztergom was the capital of Hungary from the 10th till the 13th century when King Béla IV moved to Budapest and gave his former castle to the Archbishop. During subsequent battles over the centuries Esztergom Castle and the town were besieged, conquered and destroyed but a lot of the fortifications remained. Once the bishops regained control in the 1700s work started to remove the remains of Saint Stephen and Saint Adalbert churches so the new cathedral could be built.
