Farewell Spit to Foxton Beach, New Zealand

The marble rock of nearby Takaka Hill hides a cave system, sinkholes and underground rivers. Rivers flowing through the Waikoropupu Valley has eroded down through this cap rock to a point where the Pupu Springs has been able to burst through. There are also three large freshwater springs a few kilometres offshore in Golden Bay itself. They are also part of this marble water system explaining the slightly salty water found here. Some sea water can sometimes be drawn into the vents and find its way to the main vent here at Pupu. Select the photo below to see more of this boardwalk that follows Fish Creek.
