The Metropolitan Cathedral lies on the Avram Iancu Square dominated by the Avram Iancu Statue. He was a Transylvanian Romanian leader who played an important role in the Austrian Empire Revolutions in the mid 1800s. The statue stands in a fountain on rocks symbolising the Apuseni Mountains.
