Tanna Island, Vanuatu

Traditional Vanuatu is alive and well. Villagers here are doing their washing in a fresh water spring that comes out of the rock pools on the beach near the main village. Here in Tanna, the locals consult their local village chief to make decisions when there are disputes (over 1000 chiefs on Tanna). According to local legend Chief Mahdikdik took the soil of Tanna and threw it in all directions creating Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and America. The soil was scattered by the wind creating the Pacific islands.
