Tanna Island, Vanuatu

We parked only 300m from the crater rim. As soon as we got out of the 4WD we felt and heard an explosion and looked up to see glowing boulders shooting up into the air along with the smoke and ash. Luckily it wasn't blowing our way but all around us was evidence of the boulders that had been thrown there by the volcano. Someone had cleared a path to the top and lined it with these volcanic rocks as a guide. This became very important later when it was pitch black so that we could find our way back down by torchlight. The sign on the left had the usual info about how dangerous it could be, do so at your own risk etc but also had a 'postbox' where you could post a letter from the volcano - touristy gimmick!
