UK and Europe Roadtrip - Battle Abbey

Battle Abbey is a partially ruined Benedictine abbey that was founded to commemorate the bloody Battle of Hastings that took place here in 1066. William the Conqueror erected the abbey to mark the location of his triumph with the high altar being placed at the spot where King Harold fell. The Abbey Gatehouse with its impressive towers was not built until 1338.
